This post on X (formerly Twitter) claiming that an arrest warrant for Somaliland President Muse Bihi has been activated for crimes against humanity is FALSE.
The post reads: “Breaking news: Muse Bihi’s arrest warrant has been activated for crimes against humanity committed since 1994–1996 & 2022–2023.”
The publication is accompanied by a picture montage of President Bihi and the ICC logo.
There is no mention of who activated the arrest warrant.
A keyword search on the International Criminal Court website to determine if such an arrest warrant had been issued found no evidence backing the claim.
When contacted, Fadi El Abdallah, the ICC spokesperson and head of the public affairs, disowned the claim via email, stating: “It is false news.”
Hundreds of people were killed and wounded in 2023 when fighting erupted between the Somaliland army and SSC-Khatumo forces in Las Anod Town, Sool region.
The fighting started on 6 February 2023.
The claim was posted amid Somaliland’s recent threat to recapture the land it lost in the conflict with the SSC-Khatumo forces.
Somaliland is a breakaway territory of Somalia.
