Somaliland Government moved back to its hardline stance as it rejected the proposals from a group of the country’s business people and investors to unlock the impasse with the opposition parties over the presidential elections impasse.
Just two days after the opposition parties had welcomed the proposal to have the presidential elections and the political organization elections be held at the same time.
The government now says the businessmen who have invested massively in the Somaliland economy are working for the interests of the country’s leading opposition party WADDANI and its presidential candidate Abdirahman Irro.
Speaking at a local TV station Horyaal TV, Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Abdillahi Hussein Mohamed said the proposals were lopsided and unwelcome by the government.
“First of all, the businessmen are good and mature men, but 5 of them belonged to Waddani and I think they are Waddani,” said Abdullahi Hussein.
The minister also pointed out that the businessmen consulted lawyers who campaign for Waddani Party, and that is why the their proposal is flawed.
Somaliland’s opposition parties UCID and Waddani had hit a reconciliatory button by welcoming the proposals so as to ease the tension that has been building in the county.
