Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro has welcomed a peace proposal from Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni to resolve ongoing conflicts in the Sanaag region.

During a meeting with Somaliland’s traditional leaders at the presidential palace on Wednesday, President Irro also praised the mediation efforts led by traditional elders from Ethiopia’s Somali Regional State, describing them as crucial to increasing stability.

“I welcome Puntland’s peace proposal for a stable and united Sanaag, and I sincerely appreciate the role played by the peace delegation,” Irro stated.

He urged elders to continue promoting dialogue-based solutions to end the conflict while stressing that Somaliland remains ready to defend itself if necessary. “Our focus is on peace, unity, and progress, and fulfilling the responsibilities entrusted to us by the people,” he said.

“The government believes that the tensions in eastern Sool and Sanaag should be addressed through peaceful means, but we will not hesitate to defend our citizens when required,” Irro warned.

Despite these measures, tensions remain high, which have long been contested in the Sool and Sanaag regions over the last few months, with the latest clashes killing dozens of people.
