Dozens of discontented youths protested in Hargeisa on Friday over the arrest of Osman Omar Dool (pictured above), a vocal critic of the Somaliland government on social media.
The Grand Sultan of the Isaaq clan, Sultan Daoud Sultan Mohamed Sultan Abdikadir, addressed the youths, demanding Dool’s release within 24 hours and warning of consequences if his demand is unmet. Abdikadir reassured the protesting youths that Dool was unharmed and emphasized accountability for those responsible for his arrest.
Sultan Daoud Sultan Mohamed Sultan Abdikadir was crowned the Supreme Chief of Somaliland in 2021. He inherited his title following the death of his father, Sultan Mohamed Sultan Abdikadir. As the head of the Isaaq clan, Sultan Daoud wields considerable power in Somaliland.
Dool, a member of the Somaliland diaspora and a former representative of the Waddani party in Europe, is known for his fierce social media critiques of the Somaliland government. Although he has visited Somaliland several times without incident, the reasons for his current detention remain unclear. Protesters gathered at the airport to welcome him.
The demonstrations hd strted on Thursdy in front of the Egal International Airport shortly after the arrest of Dool. Police had to fire shots at the protesters.
