The first female member of the Somaliland House of Representatives was officially sworn in as a MP on Saturday, after more than two years of the House being dominated by male members.
Former Minister of Finance, Amina Mohamed Diriye, who was among the candidates elected to the House of Representatives in the May 31, 2021 elections, took the oath of office as a lawmaker following the death of Nur Osman Guuleed, who was also a member of parliament.
Amina and Noor both run for the UCID party in the Awdal region with Noor beasting Amina to the second place, so Amina, who then became the Deputy Minister of Investment, now resigned from her Ministerial position and inherited Noor’s position.
The other members of parliament have welcomed Amina’s membership, with many expressing hope that her presence will bring positive change and that she will be a voice for women and underrepresented groups.
Amina had previously worked in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates before returning to Somaliland several years ago.
