The Finnish government has offered go mediate in the talks between the Somaliland government and the opposition over the election impasse.
The Finnish government’s Envoy to the Horn of Africa, Sultan Said Ahmedsaid he is ready to work with the government and the opposition to end the stalemate.
This comes just a week after the talks between the two opposing sides collapsed with the opposition parties WADDANI and UCID accusing the government of insincerity and lack of commitment.
“The Finnish government’s Envoy for the Horn of Africa, Sultan Said Ahmed, who is from Somaliland, accompanied by Awo Ahmed from the Finnish Embassy in Nairobi, said that he is interested on behalf of the European Union to intervene in the dispute regarding the elections in Somaliland.” Read a facebook post from the ruling Kulmiye party.
According to the Kulmiye party their side is ready for mediation and any dialogue to end the current conflict.
The Finnish Envoy recently held meetings with the leaders of Somaliland’s opposition parties Waddani and UCID to discuss the dispute over the elections dispute.
The European Union which Finland is party to has stated its concern and disappointment over the election standoff and continued abuse of democracy in Somaliland orchestrated by the government.
