The president of the Republic of Somaliland Abdirahman Mohamed Irro today officially launched the education curriculum for prisoners serving sentences in the country.
The president said the government will ensure prisoners get full education and learn different skills under the project initiated by the Ministry of Justice.

The Somaliland leader said that this step is a clear testament of how the government is committed to protecting human rights, rehabilitation of the country’s prisons and facilitating the rehabilitation in the prisoners.

This is the first time that a modified education system is implemented within the prisons of Somaliland, which will ensure that prisoners get educational opportunities that enable them to become employed once they complete the prison sentences.

“This program provides inmates an opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills, which can help them to interact well after they finish prison,” said the President.
He added: “The government is committed to protecting the rights of Somaliland citizens, developing skills and getting job opportunities.”
“Access to education is a fundamental right, and education programs in prisons are being implemented to ensure this. Many people in prison don’t have a real education or job skills. This program will provide basic education, professional training, and ethical learning to increase their employment opportunities after they get out of prison,” said the president.
He said the launching of the project is an important step towards the development of the justice system of the country, with a focus on reforming the prisons and rehabilitation of the prisoners.
