Hargeisa, Somaliland: Somaliland’s primary opposition candidate for the presidency, Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi “Irro”, along with his team, recently held a meeting with Karin Johansson, the Ambassador of the European Union to Somalia, and her delegation who are currently in the capital city of Hargeisa.

The meeting, which was of a high-level nature and lasted for an extended period, focused on various topics such as the ongoing election campaigns, the upcoming presidential and political parties/associations elections, as well as the collaboration between the EU and Somaliland.

Dr. Irro shared insights from the meeting, stating, “During our discussions with Ambassador Johansson, we covered a wide range of issues, including the upcoming elections, campaign strategies, and the latest preparations” according to a post published on his official social media channels.

Additionally, the conversation touched upon the delicate peace and security situation in the Horn of Africa region, highlighting the potential for mutual cooperation.

The Horn is currently facing a complex future due to conflicts in countries such as Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, and the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden region as well.

While Dr. Irro did not explicitly mention it, the meeting between Somaliland’s incumbent President and Ethiopia’s Prime Minister on New Year’s Eve to sign a Memorandum of Understanding has sparked speculation and diplomatic tensions among various nations.

The European Union is a key supporter of Somaliland’s democratization process, including its upcoming elections.

Dr. Irro expressed gratitude to Ambassador Johansson and her team for the EU’s consistent support in the development and democratization of Somaliland. He emphasized the significant contributions made by the EU delegates towards the nation’s efforts to achieve its democratic aspirations.

In conclusion, the meeting was described as “productive and insightful” by the Presidential hopeful. This has the potential to be the starting point to bridge the gap that has divided Somaliland and its international partners during the current Kulmiye-led administration, which many have labeled as isolationist.

Leveraging his extensive experience in diplomacy, the Waddani presidential candidate is seen as dedicated to improving Somaliland’s regional and global standing.
