In democratic societies, governments are entrusted with maintaining national security and safeguarding the integrity of a country’s borders. The national army plays a crucial role in this task, as its primary responsibility is to defend the nation from both internal and external threats. However, when a government fails to effectively manage the military and secure the nation’s territories, it raises serious concerns about its leadership and capability.
In the scenario where a government takes over the administration of a country with a fully established national army and secure borders, the expectation is that such stability should be maintained and even strengthened. Unfortunately, this has not been the case in the situation in Somaliland. Upon assuming power, the government began to undermine the trust and efficiency of the national army. The military, once a respected institution, became weakened and divided, with its credibility eroded. This had devastating consequences, as the government’s mishandling of the defense forces led to the loss of control over several regions, which were then captured in the midst of conflict.
The government’s inability to secure the nation’s borders is not only a failure of defense policy but also a breach of trust with the people. A government that was entrusted with a well-organized military force should have focused on enhancing the army’s capabilities and strengthening national security. Instead, by distrusting the very institution designed to protect the country, the government contributed to the destabilization of the nation. The loss of territories during its tenure is evidence of its failure to perform its primary duty of national defense.
Despite these failures, it is alarming that the same government is campaigning for re-election, positioning itself once again as the best choice for managing the country’s national defense. This raises questions about accountability and the responsibility of political leaders to face the consequences of their actions. If a government has already demonstrated its incapacity to safeguard the country’s borders and ensure the proper functioning of its army, what basis does it have to ask for another mandate?
Furthermore, the loss of national territory due to poor governance not only weakens the country’s sovereignty but also places the lives of its citizens at risk. A government that has proven incapable of protecting the country from such threats should face criticism for its failure. Re-electing the same administration could repeat the cycle of insecurity, mistrust, and military weakness, potentially leading to even more devastating consequences for the nation.
In conclusion, it is essential for any government seeking re-election to have a proven track record of success, particularly in areas as vital as national defense. In this case, the government in question has failed to maintain the security of the nation, leading to the loss of regions and weakening the national army. Allowing such an administration to return to power would be a disservice to the people, who deserve leadership that is both competent and accountable. Therefore, the public should critically evaluate the performance of this government before making a decision in the upcoming elections.
