Wadani party presidential candidate Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro has described the Somaliland government’s response to Tuesday’s protest in Las Anod as a barbaric act.
Irro’s comments came after police forcibly quelled a protest with live gunfire. The demonstrations were in response to the uptick in killings in Las Anod.
It is not immediately clear if there were any casualties or serious injuries.
Wadani Party official Abdifatah Abdullahi Abdi Hadrawi was shot dead by gunmen on Monday evening shortly after returning from the mosque.
“I strongly condemn the brutal acts committed by the government yesterday in Las Anod. It is unacceptable that murderers Sool (region) have not been arrested,” said Irro.
He urged the government to address the repeated murders of Las Anod intellectuals, calling for authorities to strengthen security and provide safety for the residents of the Sool region.
Irro urged the people to maintain control and cooperate with security forces in apprehending the murder suspects.

The people of Lasanod are protesting against the repeated planned killings of the region’s intellectuals.
The outgoing President of Somaliland, Muse Bihi Abdi, who spoke about the killings and unrest in Lasanod, blamed the enemies of Somaliland for the killings and the unrest in Lasanod.
He said that there is a need to jointly prevent planned killings in Lasanod, and called for efforts to find out who is behind the killings.
Somaliland’s opposition parties described the way the Somaliland government responded to yesterday’s deadly protest in Lasanod as unacceptable.
