Opposition politicians currently being held in prison following their arrest for partcipating in street protests on August 11 have reportedly gone on hunger strike.

Somaliland’s Wadani Party said the opposition officials incarcerated in Baki prison are on a hunger strike in protest of their illegal detention.

“The 26 prisoners in the Baki District Jail in Awdal Region, including the Secretary of Youth and Sports of the National Party, Yusuf Tadhase, the Chairman of Marodi-jeh Region of the National Party Mawlid Qaro, Mukhtar Mingiste, Abdi Hassan Dugulo, Yusuf Ali Isman, who are members of the Central Council of the Waddani Party, are on a hunger strike.” said Secretary of Justice of the National Party Yonis Ahmed Yonis.

Waddani party says some of the prisoners are sick and are yet to get any medical attention.

The opposition leaders arrested for campaigning and participating pro-election protests that took place in Somaliland on August 11, 2022.

Somaliland prison guards have dismissed the hunger strike claims.

Commander of the Somaliland Prison Guards Major General Ahmed Awaali Yusuf (Libaax) dismissed the Waddani statement as false and threatened legal action on the Secretary for the allegations.
