Somaliland Supreme Court has ruled that the arrest and incarceration of parliamentarian Mohamed Abib is unconstitutional.
The supreme court on Monday ordered the release of opposition MP Mohamed Abib, who had been detained for a month at a prison near the port city of Berbera.
The court ruled that the MP’s arrest was unlawful, following a unanimous vote by the regional parliament to maintain his immunity, which complicated the government’s efforts to keep him detained and undermine his political career.
In a statement to local television, the MP confirmed his release and expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him during the 30 days he was “illegally” detained in Mandera prison.
Abib confirmed his release via a statement.
“I confirm that I have my freedom back and I thank everyone who suffered during the 30 days I was illegally jailed in Mandera.” MP Mohamed Abiib said.
This comes just few days after Waddani parliamentary candidate Abdirahman Irro visited Abib at the Marsabit jail in the weekend.
Irro visited Abib on Saturday and demanded for his immediate release terming his imprisonment as unconstitutional and illegal.
“This morning I went on a trip to the Mandera prison where the people’s fighter MP Mohamed Abib is imprisoned,” Irro said.
“I met the MP and I interviewed him about his health condition, his safety and the way he has been treated.”
Irro said Abib is a victim of oppressive leadership, incarcerated for his voice against poor and bad leadership.
