Somaliland President says the government has allocated $10 million for this year’s elections
In an interview with France 24 Eye on Africa show, Bihi said he had no plans to extend his term in office.
He spoke as the chairman of the electoral commission announced the voter registration kits have returned to Hargeisa after voter identification.
Electoral chairman Musa Hassan Yusuf said all technical aspects and engaging of all stakeholders will be done to ensure the elections are held as should be.
The EC however did not indicate the date of the elections that were previously supposed to have been held in November last year.
Opposition party Waddani maintains it will not accept any further delays in holding the elections which are lomng overdue.
Khadar Abdi, the Waddani secretary general said the president is not keen on having the election held due to fear of losing.
The president’s decision to register a new slate of weaker opposition associations rather than compete with the current parties in a Presidential election has led to the postponement of the presidential elections, which were planned for November 13, 2022, and have resulted in deadly protests.
The election issue remains unresolved, as the government wants the party-based election to be held first, while the opposition wants the presidential election to be held first.
Although the Somaliland House of Elders extended the President’s term by two years, Bihi has recently announced the elections in 2023.
