The Somaliland National Human Rights Commission now claims the opposition leaders and journalists arrested in Hargeisa a week ago during the pro democracy protests are being tortured in jail.

The commission said they have credible information the opposition leaders have been subjected to inhumane treatment as calls for their unconditional release grew.

Police have denied the allegations by the human rights body.

But the civic body said continued incarceration of the opposition adherents will escalate the tension in the country caused by the political impasse between the government and the opposition over delays in holding presidential elections.

The opposition parties insist that the presidential elections must be held in November as per the constitution. The government has remained non commital.
