Somaliland’s main opposition party Waddani says there must be a political consensus before the presidential elections are held.
The Waddani party presidential candidate Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro who was given a heroic welcome as he returned to the Somaliland capital Hargeisa from a tour across the country said a political agreement must be reached before the end of the President Bihi’s 5-year term which ends on November 13, 2022.
“We must have a consensus to agree on the way forward and how we are going to democratically ensure that we hold presidential elections,” he said.
“There must be a political agreement between the exiting president and all the players in the presidential race. Nothing short of that we will not participate in any elections,” said Irro.
Irro who returned from a trip to the eastern regions of Somaliland, spoke to thousands of his supporters in the capital of Hargeisa said the country was ready for elections.
“Are we not ready for an election? Do we want an agreement on the election?, Inshallah, either an agreement will be entered into, or our decision will remain in place.” Irro said.
“We are telling the international community and the people of Somaliland that we are ready for elections, and we are ready for the presidential election,”.
