Somaliland government has given a hint the presidential elections may be held in 2023.
According to a tweet, the presidency announced that funds had already been allocated to the National Elections Committee.
“With the approval of the 2023 budget, the National Elections Commission has the resources necessary to begin the voter registration process enabling us to hold elections as soon as possible in 2023 directed by the NEC’s timeline,” said the government in a tweet.
The presidential elections were initially scheduled for November 13 2022 but this has since changed after the NEC said it did not have the time and finances to hold the polls as planned.
The NEC said the earliest they can organize and hold the elections will be in July 2023.
The issue ran into further controversy when the House of Elders unilaterally extended the term of president Muse Bihi by another two years.
The country’s opposition has said they will not recognize the president after the expiry of his term in November unless he holds a round table meeting to come up with an election time table.
