The Somaliland Police now says it will deal ruthlessly with anybody who participates in pro-democracy demonstrations being called by the country’s opposition.
The police warned the opposition parties against organizing a demonstration without permission.
“Unauthorized demonstrations that mobilizes the youth is illegal, and the police’s role is to prevent these actions, ” said the police.
Instead the ice called on the public to help in preventing the demonstrations “we are informing the public to help us and monitor the issue”.
The constitution of Somaliland guarantees the right for political parties and the public to hold peaceful rallies.
The Somaliland Police forces have recently lost international funding due to their crack down on pro-democracy demonstrators in Hargeisa.
Somaliland’s opposition parties are planning to stage against the postponement of the presidential election that are supposed to be staged on November 13, 2022 after mediations with the President Bihi broke down.
Political tensions remain high in the country with the opposition insisting that elections must be held on the due date without fail.
The opposition has accused the president of planning to extend his term in office
