The international community is showing great concern on the violation of human rights in Somaliland.
Eleven representatives from various embassies that work closely with Somaliland met President Musa Bihi on Wednesday and expressed their displeasure at how the government has treated opposition leaders and supporters in the recent past.
The representatives from the United States and the European Union nations expressed their displeasure at the deteriorating democracy and the shrinking freedom of expression in the country that has been previously a shining example in the Horn of Africa region.
They said the violation of human rights and the dictatorial tendencies being exhibited by the government will taint the image of the country and erode the goodwill it has enjoyed from the international community.
This is the second time the international community is calling out the Musa Bihi leadership on the shrinking democratic space in the country.
Just over a fortnight ago, opposition leaders and supporters were brutally attacked by police officers to quell street demonstrators called by the opposition to pressure the government to call for the presidential elections.
Several leaders and protesters were injured while others including journalists were arrested and are still being held up in police cells.President Bihi has been accused of attempting to extend his term in office beyond November when elections are expected to be held.
The opposition has said they will not recognize his leadership beyond November.
